Hi,
I'm not sure if you have read my posts the last several months, but I have stepped down and am not involved in my MLM company anymore. I'm 20 years old, in my last year of university and live in New Zealand.
Since I'm not in MLM anymore (it wasn't my particular company I disliked, it was the whole concept of MLM). I learnt lots of vital business skills such as being more confident, making cold calls, selling etc, which I'm very proud of myself for.
But....
Where do I go from here? I am in the process of purchasing both cashflow 101 and 202 (e games) to play and learn about investing. I'm really interested in both real estate and stocks.
So for my last year of uni, since I have a wee bit of free time on my hands, where should I go from here? Find a part time job to invest and learn all about the stock market? Keep teaching myself through books, etc without any action to invest in myself? Start a part time business around my interests? Sell some products/services?
I'm not exactly sure where to go from here, I had mentors in MLM which was good, they answered my questions when I had them, but who do I ask now? Please help!
Thanks.

Hey thegremlin,
Here's the scoop. This crazy 24 year old kid set some RECORDS in the network marketing industry last year.
He built TWO separate companies into thousands of people in less than 12 months flat!
He's earning multiple 6 figures from both, and did a vast majority of his building all from some 'Secret' Google strategies.
Well, I just got clued in last night that he was sharing the exact Internet strategy he used to do it for FREE today on his blog, and you can get access to his blog here...
If you've ever wanted to recruit thousands of people into your organization, and do it in 1/4 the time it takes most people...
Then this kid's strategies and tactics will absolutely help you. Check them out now...
Yours In Knowledge, Freddy D Uquillas
P.S. Honestly, this kid is SMART. When you see what he did that fly's by most network marketers, you will be kicking yourself you haven't done this sooner...

In a regular Network Marketing business, people are being taught to do all of that and that is all that they know. Not everyone likes to talk to as many people as possible, get their number, follow up with them, book an appointment, and follow up a little more.
Is that the main reasons why you failed? I think it is.
What I would suggest that you do is to find a MLM business online that only requires you to send traffic to your own splash pages and the system closes sales for you on auto=pilot. How does that sound? The system that I am using in my sig does that. I know it sounds like I am trying to sell you this opportunity but I am not. I am just recommending it.

Wow you guys that responded to him are obnoxious.
Definitely keep reading and investing in yourself. I would suggest that you find an area of business that you are interested in first off. Moonlighting on the Internet by Yanik Silver is a good book if you are look to make some money on the internet. I can give you some advice once you figure out what area of business you want to go into.

Hey Gremlin,
The answers to your questions are Yes,Yes and Yes.
I know you are a bit confused now since what you did didn't work out.
You have to find what you like the most, and start doing it.....don't sit back and wait for something.
Get all the info for free that you can and study....you know what that's all about.
With any venture you take next you will learn something even if it doesn't work out.
The best piece of advice for me was and still is with anything you or I do......
Are you willing to be a little uncomfortable now, for awhile learning and doing what it is your not comfortable with.... or do you want to be uncomfortable years from now, because you didn't want to be uncomfortable when you were younger.
I hope this makes sense to you.
I heard if you read on any subject for 1 hour a day for 5 years you will become an expert on that subject. So just amplify that.
Contrary to what most will tell you I think you should limit your focus to 1 or 2 things and go with them with all your heart!
Don't spread yourself too thin.
See yourself, at whatever you decide, everyday, like you already have it!
What really works well for me also, is what advice would I give to a dear friend of mine? Take that advice and use it for myself.
The thing I like the most about network marketing is that by being a bit uncomfortable now, I know that in the future, I will be SET for the rest of my life! (if you know how to think.....and what to look out for.) And to think I started with NOTHING!
Anyways, I know that you will be successful because you know how to find answers.....that's by asking questions and not totally relying on yourself!! To your future! DAC

Gremlin, Glad to hear you are asking these questions at such a young age (whether you realize it or not). At your age, you're going to have to dabble a bit out there and really search for what "feels" right. Make a plan to literally spend the next 1-2 years trying different things and acquiring some more experience...who knows, in 3 months you may find something that you are truly passionate about. Businesses take time to develop and gain a life of their own. I started mine in the Fall of 2004 (rough start by the way) and we've grown so much and are so focused now on what we provide, that there is no room for distractions. I'm passionate about what I do, but I didn't buy my business plan off of someone else either...I went out and took experiences and ideas from those I met along the way and turned it into my own. Take every tid-bit that anyone gives you...filter it, and then find a way to make it your own. Don't rush, and follow your gut. You left MLM likely because it didn't fit with your gut...that's ok, listen to it. Finally, stay focused. One of the mis-steps most easily made is trying to do everything all at once. You can try everything all at once (not well, but it can be done), but make sure you boot the bad stuff when your gut tells you it's not a fit... Some potentially helpful things that have helped me along the way: - Book, Think and Grow Rich By Napoleon Hill - Book, Atlas Shrugged By Ayn Rand - Internet, The Thirty Day Challenge - That's a local site for you down there by the way... - Personal Mentors Locally (Mastermind Group) Good luck and keep at it. Your path is out there, probably in front of you, you just haven't found it yet. Cheers, Ryan

Hi the gremlin
I totally understand where you are comming from. I was in my first networking company at age 20 and out it at 21. I choose to stay with MLM but that is what sat well with me. I totally feel that you should keep reading and growing yourself because what ever you decide to do the growth will help you out. I feel that it's helped me tons. You might be doing something by now and if you are that's great. If your not, take some time and really look inside of yourself and find out what it is that you love to do and find a way to create a business out of it. It might be hard but it would be totally worth it. Just follow your heart. It normally will lead you in the right direction. To your success my friend. Steve

There's a recent college grad in the States, his name escapes me, that didn't know "what to do next." So he decided to try a different job in each of the 50 different states. He later went on to write a book about his experiences and probably made a boat load of money. But the story is fascinating.
All the "old" people in your life are probably telling you not to worry, you have plenty of time to decide. And being one of those old 40-somethings, I tend to agree. But I think you can make yourself a short term plan (1 or 2 years) to just try different things.
Apply for jobs in totally different industries, especially short term temp work. Volunteer at charities, zoos, whatever. You never know what your gonna find. And remember, don't judge the experiences by the actual jobs, or the jerk bosses that give you a hard time. Take every experience with an open mind - see how the big picture works.
I've had the luck of being a computer programmer for many years. In my gigs, I had to inadvertantly learn a company's procedures in order to build them software. Each project was a lesson into someone else's world. Who knows if any of them will ever help me in the future - but it certainly opens your eyes on how vast and interesting businesses can be.

i would caution not to quit on mlm just yet
are you ready for a job? job hunting? bad economy? pink slip? making someone else rich? ready for 50 hour weeks? what about 60 hour weeks?
J.O.B. = JUST OVER BROKE
a lot of bad mlm's, maybe this mlm was not your cup of tea, maybe you felt it was not 'ethical', the way i feel about a lot of the mlm companies these days that sell 'seminars','self improvement' or whatever language they choose, $2,000 level 1, $5,000 for level 2 and then they have the $12,000 or higher cost, to sit in a hotel conference room to learn something that you can read for free from a bookstore... keep reading, keep improving, success is a journey of discovery
keep involved with the mentors you liked, if you liked any, because i still mentor all my peeps, because i am cool like that, just kidding, but it is true, a real mentor will always help you, no matter if you belong to the company or not, do not get me wrong advice is valuable and you can get plenty for free from a mentor, buy your mentor some wine, or invite them to lunch to pick his/her brain, found out what they like
networking as in business, keep in touch with everyone, make friends, then one day return the favor to someone else who asks YOU for advice
this is the rich dad website, read all the rich dad books yet? read another, exchange books with other like minded people, thus stay in touch with mlm'ers and trade for their books and training materials
What are you waiting for? You know you are paying TOO MUCH for long distance and you do not have to! You can find a better rate and help a charity at the same time....

Following Kiyosaki's example, you might try one of three things:
1. Take a part-time job in sales and marketing and learn all you can, since when you are running any type of business those are vital skills to have.
2. Join a local master mind group that has different entrepeneurs so that you can maybe find some mentors.
3. Join a local real estate investing club to rub shoulders with other real estate investors. Learn from them, and take your time to decide what type of real estate investing you want to do.
4. Pay off whatever debt you currently have from the money you make from sales.

Best advice man, go experiment... out of ideas? time to get some new experiences.
Experiences will generate new ideas, and open up new doors. once you find your thing, go full force with it, and never look back.

The best advice I can give you is to focus on having your money or investments generating income and not your time. It is the essential concept of cashflow quandrants. Do whatever you have to do to get into the B position. Once you are in the B position ensure that you run your business, and your business does not run you. Eventually you will want the business to operate itself. Once you have reached this stage start building the next business.
If you are looking for specific advice as to fields and industries: I personally like real estate, franchises, and vending machines. (Prior to this I spent most of my time in service-based technology-related businesses.. but I finally realized that my time is too valuable to sell.)
Feel free to email me for more specific discussion!

Hey "the gremlin" I was just curious to see where you are at now - about 6 months after your first post. I think everyone that answered gave you some really great advice. You just have to take what you like, what fits, and leave the rest. I couldn't think of anything to really add but, I am curious to know how it's going, now that University is done and all.
Do you have to much month left at the end of your money?

Have you tried Affiliate Marketing? Since it's free there's little risk and as a Uni student you probably have more time than money. Also you don't have to be a salemen to succeed.
PM if you have questions.

the gremlin,
It's great that you're starting so young. I got excited about financial freedom around age 23, and it's taken me quite some time to get there.
Keeping the knowledge pouring in helps immensely. Whatever knowledge you can absorb, do it!
I live in the US, but I'm in an MLM out of New Zealand. I think it's pretty awesome because their product is *fantastic*. However, the methods they're teaching don't work very well.
Applying other things I've learned to their distribution model is a totally different story!
Lots of learning and strength of character can take you places. Don't let the nay-sayers get you down. And more importantly, don't let your own little devil of emotions get you down either. Keep taking steps forward and you'll do fine.
The trick is finding which step to take next. I bounced around a lot and took a lot of wrong steps. But I got over it, learned, and kept stepping. Now I run into failure whenever possible, so I can get past it and find out what works.
Having a mentor or two is extremely helpful as well. But be wary of mastermind groups where you're surrounded by a bunch of people that hope for success but complain only of their failures. That's a heavy weight that doesn't help when you're growing your wealth.
As an aside, I use the word wealth above to refer to knowledge. Knowledge begets value. Value begets financial reward, gratification, and ultimately success. I remind my team of this constantly because it's the truest path to "success" I've found.
To growth and success,
Max Leadford

What do you want to do? And, what resources, financial and non-financial, do you have available to you? What kind of time frame are you thinking about? One year? Five years? Ten years?
Your answers to questions like these will most likely to help you determine what your next moves should be.
BTW: As you may imagine, "the answers" are different for each person.

The most vital thing you can do to succeed in life in general is to continue developing your mind. If you read 50 books on one topic you have learned an equivelant of a Masters degree student. Above all thing, never quit being a student. For some free insight, Youtube Jim Rohn, Napoleon Hill, Earl Nightingale, Brian Tracy, Zig Ziglar to name a few. The real problem seems to be two things. 1. You need a plan. 2. You didn't have the right coaches. If you were in the NFL, would you want to play for Andy Reid ( NO Championships) or Bill Belichick(5 Championship appearances in last 8 years!) If you want to be a champ, find coaches that have previous success at the level you want, not just previous experience. Your plan does not have to have everything thought out but it should serve a rough draft. You don't need to start by knowing what business you want to do or what to invest in, just start with how much you want to make by what date. ex: I, the gremlin, want to make $30k per month 7 years from now. That is a great start to writing a plan. Furthermore, stay flexible and create. Don't give up on MLM but don't jump back into one just because someone offers to help you make $30k a month. What ever you choose to do, realize that you only fail after you fail to believe you can win! If you don't that a certain business is right for you, then don't do that one, but don't completely rule out its industry. My last suggestion is to never give anyone else responsiblity for your success or failure. If you fail were someone else has succeeded, it is your fault. If you succeed, it is because you did what needed to be done. I hope you have the greatest success. Mike Malbrough

Your question is tricky. Like has been said by many, it's only you who knows what you want to do, no one can tell you that. It's when you would have found what it is you wold like to do can people help you to move forward. There are many coaches and mentors here on richdad in many different areas who are looking for people to coach and make them money. But your question,it is somewhat strange.

When Robert K. was just starting out he start a number of inexpensive businesses. You are going to make mistakes and you want to make them as cheaply as you can which is another reason why Robert K suggests network marketing.
I am currently in about 7 different network marketing businesses as well as a number of other businesses too. I owe what I know to network marketing.
If you did not find the right network marketing company for you then look around till you do. I join a company that I was not 100% into but the offered some good products I am still with them to this day they are not my primary business. Yet if I would of waited till I did find them I would of delayed my success 3-4 years.

Its great to see that you recognize the value of the training you received. And whatever you learned from your MLM mentors can be adapted to any business or career. For example, many MLM programs now recognize that the Internet is and will continue to play a large role in network marketing and recruiting, but this is also true of traditional brick and mortar businesses too. So your marketing and communications skills are applicable to whatever life holds for you down the road -- in any field. Find something you love to do and go for it.
