The Power of Commitment

One of the first hurdles women are often faced with when it comes to investing is commitment.

Commitment is essential to moving forward towards achieving one’s dreams. Yet often we shy away from commitment because -- consciously or unconsciously -- we are afraid we won’t succeed and we want to leave ourselves an easy out. While this may seem like a sensible safeguard, it usually leads to the very thing we are trying to avoid -- failure -- which in turn causes us to give up. But when we are truly committed, failure is no longer a show-stopper, it is something we learn from -- before we pick ourselves up and renew our resolve to succeed.

On the topic of commitment I’d like to share with you a brilliant poem called “On Commitment” by W.H. Murray that describes the power and magic that happens when a person truly commits to something.

On Commitment

Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back. Always ineffectiveness.

Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation) there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans; that the moment one defiantly commits oneself, then providence moves too.

All sorts of things occur that would never otherwise have occurred.

A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance which no man could have dreamt would come his way.

I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe’s couplets – “Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.”
